“London is likely to lose thousands of jobs,” warned Ilford South MP Mike Gapes.

Talking to the Recorder following the UK’s referendum vote to leave the EU, the MP said: “I am worried about the future of our country.”

“London is a global city, which relies on investment from all around the world and it is likely to lose thousands of jobs and many of my constituents work in institutions in London.

“We warned about the consequences and we were told it was a project fear but actually this is project reality.

“We are about to face years of uncertainty and we need to find out what the alternative arrangements are going to be,” he said.

The MP also anticipated the fall of the value of the pound could lead to the UK losing its AAA financial rating and said an early general election could take place shortly after the Conservatives elect a new prime minister in October.

“It is a very damaging decision but I am pleased my constituents and people in Redbridge voted to remain,” he added.
