A COUNCILLOR has called for himself and his cycling peers to be paid an allowance for travelling to council duties.

Conservative Cllr Paul Canal said a review into whether the allowance should be created was taking a “very, very long time”.

He made the comments as revisions to the members’ allowances scheme were approved during a full council meeting at Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, Ilford.

Revisions included a new rate per mile paid back to councillors driving to approved council duties of 40p.

After the meeting Cllr Canal said: “I cycle to most meetings because it’s quicker, eases congestion and is good for everybody.

“If there’s more of an incentive to cycle rather than drive to work, that can only be a good thing.”

Mayor Cllr Jim O’Shea, who was chairing Thursday’s meeting, said the results of the review would come before the council when it was complete.
