Cabinet member seeks to 'speed up' footway parking review as Woodford Green homes hit with penalty fines

A Redbridge-wide review of footway parking could be speeded up while residents of a Woodford Green road have been hit with fines by the council.
About six residents in Eagle Terrace, Woodford Green, were slapped with penalty charges by Redbridge Council last month for parking with two wheels up on the pavement of the narrow road.
But footway restrictions have not been enforced in the area for 30 years, according to Cllr Richard Hoskins of Church End ward.
Now, Cllr Shoaib Patel, the cabinet member for transportation, has called on council officers to speed up a review into where pavement parking will be permitted in the borough.
There is a London-wide footway parking ban from which some roads are exempted, and the Redbridge survey into which roads should remain so and which should be added to the list is already under way.
Despite that, the council’s area committee two, which represents Woodford wards, is not due to be told of the results until July 2014.
Cllr Patel said: “I’m looking … to try and get it done sooner rather than later. Hopefully, it won’t take a whole year. We’ll try to get this done asap.”
Regarding Eagle Terrace, he said: “If there’s good grounds for not pursuing it, we won’t.”
Cllr Hoskins welcomed the acceleration of the review provided it remained “accurate”.
He said: “We don’t want to find out there are roads that weren’t exempted that should have been.”
Eagle Terrace residents often park with two wheels up on the pavement on one side of the road, where there are no houses.
They are “worried about the services and their cars getting down there”, according to Cllr Hoskins.
He added: “I think they’ve got a rock-solid case.
“Redbridge never enforced it and suddenly, at a time when the council is looking at it, some very keen parking enforcement officer starts slapping out penalty notices in Eagle Terrace.”
n He has asked for residents who feel pavement parking should be allowed in their road to email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
