There will be an increased police presence and possible road closures in Ilford today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday), as large crowds are expected congregate to celebrate Pakistan and India’s Independence Days.

Residents are expected to arrive in Ilford Lane to pay homage to those who devoted their lives to the freedom movement, and made sacrifices to attain their nation’s independence.

Acting sergeant, Declan Maloney, said: “Historically, residents and visitors have spontaneously assembled in the street, but this year the borough’s police and community leaders are working together to ensure public safety and minimal disruption to businesses.”

Chairman of British League of Muslims, Bashir Chaudhry, added: “Through discussions with the police this year, we have ensured that local stewards will be on hand to facilitate celebrations, along with police.

“This is a fine example of partnerships building bridges and working towards community cohesion.”
