Police are appealing for witnesses after two elderly women were asked for money by a man who called at their homes yesterday.

The first woman, an 89-year-old who lives in Charnwood Drive, Wanstead, heard a knock on her front door at 5pm.

She answered the door to a man who asked her for money so he could take a neighbour to hospital.

At 5.51pm, the suspect then knocked at an 82-year-old’s home in nearby Onslow Gardens and asked the same question.

The man is described as white.

A spokesman for Redbridge police said residents are reminded not to let people into their homes who do not have appointments.
