A petition calling for action over a roundabout dubbed “suicide alley” by campaigners will be debated by the council after gaining more than 2,000 signatures.
RedRag – the Redbridge Roundabout Action Group – launched a campaign demanding changes to the roundabout, which joins the A12 and A406.
The group wants to see traffic lights installed at the Redbridge Lane East entrance – the only direction which currently does not have them.
Vice chairman Alan Haymes said campaigners were confident of getting the council on board in petitioning TfL.
He said: “People are terrified. You feel like you are taking your life in your hands.
“People call it ‘suicide alley’. They go out of their way to avoid it.”
Mr Haymes said the roundabout was also causing problems for residents on Redbridge Lane East due to traffic being backed up along the lane.
He said they had complained over pollution from stationary cars queueing as well as delays and difficulty getting out of their own homes.
Mr Haymes said RedRag was still hoping to garner more signatures before the petition goes before full council at its next meeting on September 18.
Commenting on the petition on Saturday, Inderpal Malhi said it was a “very dangerous exit to the main junction”, while Ruby Nation dubbed it an “absolute death trap”.
Anisha Sayani said she was “scared” to use the roundabout, and Doug Davies branded it an “accident waiting to happen”.
