A two year cultural project to raise the profile of Redbridge’s high streets began last week in High Road, Ilford.

The Streets was kicked off by Australian percussion star Ben Walsh, who is currently at residency at the Southbank Centre, in central London.

He played his spectacular wheel of drums, created from recycled material.

Ben said: “To all the people with a small idea in a big city which seems to difficult ... just go for it people, just dive into the deep end, into that creative pool.”

The pan-London project is led by music producers Serious with support from the Greater London Authority culture team, and will include local artists and organisations.

Until the autumn of 2016 there will be three major programmes taking place, which will allow Ilford residents to experience cultural activities in shopping centres, high streets and cafes.
