In the guise of a good fairy, Redbridge Carnival Queen Sandra King weaved a magic spell and set the town alight.
Together with Father Christmas, she was hoisted up to the decorations, in Cranbrook Road, Ilford, to switch on a little festive spirit in November 1980. One wave of her magic wand and the traditional yuletide decorations of brightly coloured stars and giant Santas were aglow. The lights, paid for by Cranbrook Road shops, were to be switched on every day from 3.30-8.30pm until January 3.
