Barkingside pupils got the chance to hold a Paralympic torch and meet the inspirational charity founder who carried it as part of the relay last summer.

Torchbearer Arun Patel, who set up the charity, Polio Children, made a special visit to Avanti Court Primary School, Carlton Drive, last week to discuss how he overcame polio himself.

The youngsters felt honoured to meet Mr Patel, of Empress Avenue, Ilford, who spoke about his work which has helped thousands of children throughout the world with the disease.

Deputy headteacher, Junaida Bana, said: “Mr Patel enthralled the school with his tales of growing up and shared pictures and videos of children in India who had polio, but still participate in sports.

“With an inspiration attitude he survived Polio, setup a charity, started and sold a successful business all of which required immense courage.”
