However commuters travelling on the 86 route between Straford and Ilford on Monday, were surprised to step aboard the iconic red bus.

Transport for London (TfL) brought the old Routemasters out of retirement to cope with strikes.

Head of bus operations Tony Akers said: “These heritage buses were used to help meet higher passenger demand on bus routes which ran parallel to those affected by industrial action on Monday.”

Rose Stephens commented on Twitter: “Can’t believe I got on an old Routemaster bus today, the best buses!”
