October could be the month Redbridge smokers kick the habit if they take part in the Department of Health’s first ever mass quit attempt.

The month has been dubbed Stoptober as part of the national campaign, supported locally by stop smoking staff at the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT).

A trust spokesman said research shows quitting for 28 days means an individual is five times more likely to stay smoke-free.

The campaign will lead smokers through a “detailed step-by-step programme” including a preparation pack, a 28-day calendar and a “health and wealth wheel”.

Nicola Hill, Redbridge’s stop smoking service manager, said: “As well as the financial benefits of stopping smoking, those undertaking the programme will experience physical improvements including a better sense of smell and taste and more energy.

“Longer term, those who stop smoking reduce their risk of heart disease and lung cancer as well as protecting others from their second hand smoke.”

Participants will receive support from stop smoking staff and encouragement through a daily messaging service on an app, texts and Facebook.

The campaign begins on October 1.
