Leyton Orient have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of free agent Robbie Simpson on a short-term contract.

The striker was released by the O’s League One rivals Oldham Athletic at the end of last season and has been without a club ever since.

The 28-year-old, who has signed an initial two month deal, got his professional break relatively late when he signed for Cambridge United in 2006, and has also gone on to play for Coventry City and Huddersfield.

Simpson had loan spells at Brentford and Oldham before signing for the Latics permanently in January 2012.

He is perhaps most famous for scoring a wonder goal at Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup weeks before signing for Oldham permanently.

The O’s have the most potent strikeforce in League One, with Kevin Lisbie and David Mooney bagging 24 goals between them in all competitions this season.

But Shaun Batt, who scored twice against Southport in the FA Cup on Saturday, is their only other senior striker

Boss Russell Slade will be hoping Simpson’s capture helps the O’s promotion push as the games comes thick and fast over the busy Christmas period.

Slade said: “Robbie could prove to be a really handy signing for us. We know we have a small squad so need players that are versatile and he can play up front or in midfield plus he’s a great character to join the group too.

“We need to find out where he is in terms of his fitness as he’s been at a few clubs over the summer but not had a full pre-season but we’ll soon get him up to speed.”

Simpson will wear the number 25 shirt during his spell at Brisbane Road.
