“Hi, I’m Malachi - and I am interrupting your regular broadcasting to bring you this urgent message.”

A 10-year-old news anchor is calling on schools across Redbridge to help raise funds to tackle the borough’s rough sleeping crisis.

Malachi Richards-George, a pupil at SS Peter and Paul’s Catholic School, in Gordon Road, stars as a news presenter in the latest video from crowdfunding campaign Redbridge Together released today (December 4).

“We need you,” he tells the viewers, urging them to host end-of-terms parties, bake sales and competitions.

“Together we can raise the money to end rough sleeping in Ilford.”

Ten people have died homeless in Redbridge since October 2017.

At least 26 people are currently sleeping on the streets, according to the latest rough sleeper count.

Redbridge Together, of which the Recorder is a media partner, aims to raise £500,000 for pop-up hostel Project Malachi and day centre The Welcome Centre.
