A Newbury Park junction has been blasted as “dangerous” by nearby residents after a motorcyclist broke both legs in a collision at the accident hotspot on Monday.

The accident, which took place outside Newbury Park Tube station along the Eastern Avenue, follows a long line of incidents thought to have been caused by cars performing U-turns.

In January 2011, 69-year-old lollipop man Dusan Danilovic died when his car ended up on its side after a four-car pile-up as a result of drivers turning on the stretch of road.

A nearby resident and taxi driver Zafar Saddique, of Stanforth Road, claims to have heard and seen a number of incidents at the junction a short distance from his home.

He said: “There are accidents there all the time because of where the lights are.

“People can’t see the traffic and by the time they do, it’s too late.

“I saw a guy fly through the air once, he had been coming down the A12 when a car did a U-turn and hit him.

“I have told my wife and family to not do that right turn, even if they’re going in to the Tube station. I said they should go up to Gants Hill and come back down. It’s dangerous.”

It was revealed last year that between September 2007 and August 2010, four serious accidents were recorded at that junction where drivers regularly ignore the signs stating it is illegal to carry out U-turns.

The motorcyclist injured on Monday was said to have been in a serious condition, though police claimed the injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

A commuter who witnessed the aftermath recalled how the rider was “motionless” on the road.

Luke Twyman, 23, of Marks Gate, said: “The bike was still running on the floor when I arrived and I thought he must have been dead.

“They should lock the road off for all right turns there.

“I use Newbury Park station almost every day and people are always ignoring the sign. Thankfully the biker is OK.”
