Work on the Mayfield Leisure Centre in Pedley Road is scheduled to finish in May and visitors will be able to enjoy a six-lane 25-metre pool with spectator seating, a multi-purpose studio, and a 40 station hi-tech gym.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Jas Athwal took a tour of the facility today (Monday, March 26) and said along with the refurbishment of Loxford School pool and plans for a pool and gym complex at Wanstead High School, he is “without a doubt” delivering on his promise to provide better sporting facilities in Redbridge.

“The sheer scale and quality of the facilities and the programme of activities is hugely impressive,” he said.

“Helping people take control of their health and wellbeing is very important and I’m very proud of the work we are doing to deliver the first-class swimming and leisure facilities across the borough for residents, of all ages, to use.”

Redbridge Council invested £4M in the centre, with an additional National Lottery award of £750,000 from the Sport England Strategic Facilities Fund.

The complex will be operated by Vision, the council’s leisure partner who are developing a programme to meet the needs of the community.

It will be open to the public from 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm at weekends.

A range of classes from Yoga to Box-fit, Zumba to Body Max will be on offer alongside specialist sessions for youth fitness and active lifestyles.

Director of property at Sport England, Charles Johnston, said: “Thanks to £750,000 of National Lottery funding, people living in Mayfield will have a top quality sports facilities right on their doorsteps.

“Offering a brand new pool and a high tech gym, it will deliver a quality experience to both Mayfield students and the wider community.

“I wish Redbridge Council, Mayfield School and Vision Redbridge every success when the new centre opens.”
