A new leader for the Redbridge Labour group will be elected tonight.

Councillors will meet at Redbridge Town Hall in High Road, Ilford at around 7pm to take part in a secret ballot which will see a new leader and deputy elected.

This follows the vote of no confidence which saw Cllr Bob Littlewood, who had served as leader for 17 months, ousted last week. His deputy, Cllr Balvinder Saund, stepped down from her role before the ballot, saying she wanted to spend more time working on Seven Kings ward issues and with Asian women, as well as spending more time with her children.

Redbridge Labour group chairman Cllr Dev Sharma said two of the 25 members of the group were away this week and so not able to take part in the vote this evening.

Results of tonight’s ballot will be published on the Recorder website tomorrow morning.
