A new free NHS number is being launched today for people needing non-urgent care and advice.
NHS 111 will operate around the clock every day of the year with no charge from landlines and mobile phones.
Advisers, supported by clinicians, will take calls and assess symptoms before giving advice and directing callers to the right service.
The call centre will also be linked to emergency services so an ambulance can be called if needed.
Out-of-hours GP services in Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham and Havering will also re-direct to the service.
Launching NHS 111 for Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Groups, Dr Richard Burack said the number was a step in plans to help people “access the right care more quickly”.
You should call 111 if it is not a 999 emergency but you still need help fast, you do not think it can wait for an appointment with your GP, or you are unsure who to call for medical help.
For normal health concerns, GPs should still be contacted and for immediate, life-threatening emergencies, call 999.
