The former basket ball court, which was refurbished, can now be used for a variety of additional sporting activities, including football and cricket.
Tony Hoad, Secretary of the South Park Users Group, commenting on the £28,000 refurbishment said: “The development of the basket ball court to a multi-use games area is a very valuable to the local community.
“Since the games area was made available three weeks ago I have noticed the surface has become more popular with young people.”
The opening of the new multi-use games area coincided with the installation of modern gym equipment and relining of the park’s tennis courts.
One of the park’s gates, near the pond, was damaged in a traffic accident on June 29.
Users are unavailable to access the new play area through these gates, which Mr Hoad described as “rather upsetting”.
A spokesman for Redbridge Council said: “These are cast iron gates and we know their design is appreciated by the local community, we hope to restore them to their original state within the next few weeks.”
