New business group for South Woodford creatives
PUBLISHED: 10:00 26 November 2016
A new discussion group for business creatives is starting in South Woodford, spearheaded by self employed marketing consultant Abby Wright-Parkes.
Abby, of Hurstwood Avenue, South Woodford, set up the mastermind group to encourage residents in creative industries to get together for vibrant and useful debate.
“Working for yourself can be quite lonely, and I was listening to an American podcast about business which suggested mastermind groups,” the 40-year-old explained.
“I thought this could be something great to do locally.
“Some people say it’s better to do the group just with people from exactly the same industry, but I just really wanted to do it in South Woodford.”
The format can vary, but it is essentially like-minded business owners meeting regularly to discuss various aspects of their industries.
As Abby runs her own company, Optimist Consulting, which focuses on membership marketing, she said she felt “it needed to be with other creative businesses”.
“I’ve opened it up to anyone. It’s for people to get to know each other and then move onto more detailed aspects of business.”
At the moment the group is made up of people with differing experience.
There are some new start ups joining, whereas people like Abby have 20 years of knowledge of the marketing world and she hopes this will create fruitful debate.
“I started my own company in 2011 because I wanted to spend a bit more time with my children, and it’s difficult to work part time for a large business,” she said.
And Abby told Recorder readers that if she had one piece of advice for people who want to create a start-up, it would be to find your niche.
“You cannot work for everyone,” she explained.
“I’ve only learnt through experience. I’m much more targeted in my own marketing now, I focus on membership which is my speciality.
“That would be my bit of advice, and also save some money.”
If you would like to join Abby’s mastermind group, there are still some spaces and you can sign up online here.
There first session is on Monday, in Lily’s, in George Lane, South Woodford, from 9.30am to 11am.
There will be another five events by February 20 when she will review how well the group is working.
