An “exceptional” teacher from Ilford has won a national award in her chosen field of design and technology.

Rose Russell, who teaches design and technology at Ursuline Academy, Morland Road, Ilford received the Design and Technology Association Excellence Award for her support of students.

She was presented with her award at the Institution of Engineering by Professor Mark Miodownik, a materials scientist and BBC presenter.

Ms Russell dedicated her award to her “inspirational” subject leader Mrs Reilly.

She said: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

“I felt privileged to be in a room full of awesome D and T advocates and to meet some truly fascinating teachers, with many great winners who are all doing fab work getting girls into science technology engineering and maths science (STEM) careers.

“I may never ever get to go to the Oscars, but felt one step closer, as Kate Billingham, engineer, TV and radio presenter and broadcaster presented an excellent session. Her art of delivery made it into the Oscars of design and technology.”
