Developers have denied suggestions a block of luxury flats is sinking after residents voiced fears over the building.

Taylor Wimpey, the company which initially built Gabrielle House on the corner of Perth Road and Eastern Avenue at Gants Hill roundabout, said it was undertaking a year-long programme of repairs after residents complained of leaking roofs and windows.

But the company categorically refuted rumours the 214-flat development – built on the site of the former Odeon cinema – was subsiding after scaffolding was put up several months ago.

A spokeswoman said: “We have received isolated complaints about water ingress over a number of years which have all been dealt with on an individual basis. However, because these have not been successful we are undertaking the current programme of repairs which is anticipated to take approximately 12 months to complete.

“A number of residents have reported water damage to their properties resulting from leaking roofs and windows, and we are working with the building management company and its appointed consultants to ensure the problem is resolved, with roof repairs already under way at the development.

“We sincerely regret that any of our residents have experienced issues with their homes and we are committed to fully resolving them as soon as possible.

“All residents will be kept informed and updated as the investigation and subsequent repair works progress.” Residents would remain living in the flats while the works were carried out.

Discussing the scaffolding on the website Streetlife, David M wrote: “I heard it had some sinking problem with the foundations.”

Pam K said she had been “puzzled by the whole matter”.

“That scaffolding has now been in place for several months,” she wrote.
