A mum-of-two who conquered her fear of heights when she took on the Great Wall of China has raised more than £1,000 from her latest fundraising challenge.

Ramneek Sohal, 36, tackled some of the toughest peaks in the Lake District for charity Plan UK, climbing for more than seven hours.

Her efforts have bagged the organisation £1,300 for its Girls Fund, which supports millions of the world’s poorest young women.

Ramneek, from Clayhall, said: “It was really tough; it was much harder than I thought it was going to be. But it was my first mountain trek so I’m glad I gave it a go.

“I really enjoyed the experience and the support has been absolutely amazing. My family were really proud of me.”

Ramneek’s passion for charity challenges began in 2005 when she decided to walk along the Great Wall of China for Plan UK.

She said: “I wanted to do something out of my comfort zone because I was slightly scared of heights and I had never been to China so it was an opportunity to see part of the country.

“It was a challenge, I had to train for about six months for it, but when I did it I felt a great sense of achievement and conquered my fear of heights.

“I sailed through that challenge but the peaks were much harder. It was maybe a bit too much of a challenge for me.”

Ramneek, who made an impressive £7,300 in sponsorship from her first trek, has since completed sponsored runs and walks to continue her charity efforts.

After taking on a 5k run in October, she will look ahead to her next trek.

She said: “I am hoping to do another longer challenge at the beginning of next year. Maybe somewhere like South America, just somewhere I haven’t been.”
