More than 80 per cent of Redbridge main roads are above the legal limit for a toxic pollutant, it has been revealed.
Readings taken by the London Air Quality Network last year found huge quantities of toxic nitrogen dioxide on 86 out of 106 miles of roads in the borough.
The most polluted street is the High Road through Ilford, Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Chadwell Heath.
The legal limit was set by the EU but London is not hitting targets.
Redbridge Council has been given £100,000 by the Mayor of London to improve air quality in the borough.
The council currently monitors air pollution from stations in Wanstead and Ilford but under new government plans, the obligation to check local hotspots could be removed.
