More than 20 firefighters tackled a blaze at a flat in Chigwell yesterday afternoon.

Part of a four room flat on the building’s first floor was damaged in the fire as well as the roof of the two storey block of flats.

Firefighters were called at 3.30pm to the fire in Burrow Road and the fire was brought under control by about 5pm.

Four fire engines, including an aerial fire appliance attended the scene, and a total of 21 firefighters and officers.

Crew manager Collin Stocker from Hainault Fire Station, New North Road, Hainault, said: “It’s important you have a working smoke alarm. Everyone should be checking their alarms regularly. If you don’t have one, come to the station and we can arrange one free of charge.”

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
