The amount of litter on Redbridge streets has increased since the council cut sweeps from weekly to fortnightly.

Speaking at Thursday’s council meeting in Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, Ilford, Cllr Sue Nolan, cabinet member for environment, said there was six per cent more litter and detritus in public areas compared to the same period last year.

She said there has also been an increase in complaints from members of the public concerning rubbish and fly-tipping.

Cllr Ali Hai said: “The corporate strategy says the council will work towards cleaner streets but how exactly is that going to happen with this cut and further cuts planned?

“It’s an issue that concerns a lot of our residents.”

Labour group leader Cllr Jas Athwal said he had a petition from the residents of Guildford Road demanding action over fly-tipping and litter.

Cllr Nolan said that the effects of the cut could be “mitigated” by voluntary funding from area committees and community litter picks.
