A councillor has described the need for better signs, in a road which netted the council more than half a million pounds in fines last year, as a “moral responsibility”.

Cllr Zulfi Hussain said the signs are needed in Clements Road, Ilford after Redbridge Council earned 514,470 from parking tickets and fines.

“The council has refused to improve the signage and say they are meeting their legal obligations,” Cllr Hussain said. “Sometimes you need to do more – it’s a moral responsibility to make sure our residents don’t suffer unnecessarily.”

The representative of Clementswood ward said the signs were not clear enough which was why the number of tickets issued was so high, with drivers venturing into bus-only areas. “The signs could be improved. Car drivers cannot see them and 90 per cent of tickets issued were in the small area where the buses go,” he added.

A Redbridge spokesman said: “We are considering further carriageway markings on the approach.”
