A detailed model of an 11th century Ilford chapel, which took three years to build, was blessed in a special mass on Thursday.

The Hospital Chapel of St Mary & Thomas of Canterbury, Ilford Hill, held a special service in which Fr Mervyn Jennings said a special blessing before a buffet was held for the congregation.

Derek Westcott and artist Patricia Skidmore spent three years perfecting the likeness of the medieval building, which was originally built in 1145AD as a hospice for sick and elderly men.

Friends member Doreen Weller said: “The model is absolutely brilliant and is one 72nd of the size of the actual chapel. Anything that we are going to display in the building must be blessed. The special mass was also attended by Cllr Joyce Ryan and Cllr Chris Cummins.”
