Ilford would have a new zoo, sports stadium, football team and even a wishing well if children at a junior school had their way.

Pupils at Cleveland Junior School, in Cleveland Road, came up with hundreds of bright ideas when asked what they would do as mayor for a day.

Other “policies” included stopping smoking in all places, cleaner streets, more parks and recycling.

Real-life mayor of Redbridge, Cllr Muhammed Javed, even met the little usurpers on Tuesday to take their ideas back to Redbridge Town Hall.

Parents also got a chance to view the children’s work and certificates were awarded for the “biggest ideas”.

Deputy headteacher Wayne Smith, who organised the event, said all the children at the school from seven to 11-year-olds took part.

He added: “It was good to get the children thinking and believing they can make a difference.”
