Redbridge Police’s borough commander led family, friends and colleagues in a memorial service for a young Ilford Pc who was shot dead 18 years ago while attending a routine call out.
Det Ch Supt Sue Williams commemorated the death of Philip Walters on Thursday in Empress Avenue, Ilford where the 28-year-old was killed.
Floral tributes were laid at the memorial stone and a guard of honour stood whilst a minute’s silence was held.
Pc Walters, who joined the MPS in September 1993, was shot in the chest during a late shift in April 18, 1995, when he tried to arrest a man.
Det Ch Supt Williams said: “Phillip was the epitome of everything the public expect from a police officer, he was dedicated, brave and loyal and upheld the values we all aspire to.
“He was a valued police officer and will be remembered by family, friends and his colleagues both here at Red bridge and in the MPS. We should never forget that he gave his life to protect others.”
