A man has been charged with escaping from prison after he allegedly broke out of HMP Pentonville and was discovered by police in Ilford.

Matthew Baker, 28, has been arrested and charged with absconding from Pentonville Prison on November 7 while awaiting sentence.

Police found him at Friars Close, in Ilford, three days later.

Fellow prisoner James Whitlock, 31, who was on remand at the prison in Caledonian Road, Islington, also faces the same charge.

He was arrested at an address in Shepherd’s Lane, Homerton, on Sunday afternoon.

Baker’s sister Kelly, 21, of Friars Close, Ilford, has been charged with assisting an offender and harbouring a prisoner between November 6 and 10.

She appeared in custody at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Friday and was bailed to appear at Blackfriars Crown Court on December 9.

A 33-year-old man who was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail.
