A man set off on his cycle to launch a thousand mile challenge to raise money for his son’s hospice.

Scott Jackson, 39, of South Woodford, took part in the Financial News London to Monte Carlo Cycle Challange to raise money for the Haven House Children’s Hospice, Woodford Green.

Mr Jackson’s son, Thomas Jackson, 14, who suffered brain damage after complications during his birth, uses the hospice’s services and joined his dad as they rode the first mile on a specially adapted cycle.

The 20 cyclists on the challenge, which concluded in Monaco and is in its second year, raised about £2,000 each for the hospice and another chairty - The Soup Kitchen.

Mr Jackson said: “Thomas was fortunate to receive a specially adapted bike many years ago and he has experienced the same thrill of riding, that every child can enjoy.”

The group taking on the challenge were employees of Financial News - a finance industry publisher.

“We were delighted to ride the first mile with the Financial News riders and help set them off on their epic journey – Thomas loved being part of his first peloton and crossing the Thames on Blackfriars bridge.”

Haven House Children’s Hospice provide support and care for children who have life-limiting conditions and their families.

Haven House chief executive Mike Palfreman said: “Increasing numbers of city institutions are taking on fundraising challenges for Haven House and we wish the Financial News team all the very best.”
