British Transport Police said he was struck at about 9.30am and pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

A spokesman added: “The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the man and inform his family.”

The station, in High Road, reopened at about 11.30am but trains on the Greater Anglia line from Liverpool Street into Essex are running with delays of up to an hour.

The tragedy comes just days after Anita Kaur Swali, 24, was killed by a train at the station on Friday.

A cordon was set up along the pavement overlooking the tracks, where forensics officers could be seen with evidence bags.

A staff member from the station, who did not want to be identified, believed the man died in a tunnel underneath the station.

Commuters on their way to work and families going on trips during half term were turned away from the station, which was shut off by police.

Gloria Atkins, who was turned away, said she was shocked by another death so soon after Friday.

She added: “If people do this I feel so sorry for them because they must be so desperate.

“It’s really sad.”

An Abellio Greater Anglia spokesman said to expect “delays and cancellations to Greater Anglia services”.
