Victor Banjo Ogundunmade, 27, of Croombs Road, Newham, attacked Magdalena Welna with a large hunting knife in Valentines Road, Ilford, on October 31 2014, before fleeing after being spotted.

Mr Ogundunmade then ingested the poison, and was found dying in Auckland Road an hour and a half later with Ms Welna’s blood on his feet.

He was pronounced dead at King George Hospital, in Goodmayes, later that night.

A note left in Mr Ogundunmade’s bag read: “I loved her dearly but she gave me nothing but grief, now she has to experience the pain I did in a physical way.

“She was too indifferent, too ambivalent ... now she has to pay the ultimate price.”

Senior coroner Ms Nadia Persaud heard how Mr Ogundunmade told his family that Ms Welna was his girlfriend, although it appears she thought their relationship was only platonic.

Det Insp Andrew Kelly, who investigated the case, said Mr Ogundunmade “was constantly texting her”.

The inquest heard how Mr Ogundunmade had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008.

Kemi Ogundunmade, his sister, explained he had attacked her before.

She said: “He was giving me blows to the head, he said to me “I’m going to rip your jaw off”.”

Ms Ogundunmade also told the court of a time her mother rang her up because “he was trying to set himself on fire because he felt he was God”.

She added her younger brother “was extremely clever”, but he pulled out of studying medicine at Kings College London after one year in 2008.

The joint inquest at Walthamstow Coroner’s Court, almost a year after the pair died, found Ms Welna, 23, of Rigby Mews, Ilford, died of unlawful killing.

Ms Persaud concluded that mental health experts could not have forseen Mr Ogundunmade’s actions.

She found he had died of suicide.
