More than 50 women from different religions came together to discuss what it really means to love your neighbour.

The event was organised by Redbridge Faith Forum and aimed to get women talking about what the concept means to them and their faith.

Cream teas and fruit fuelled the lively discussion held at the Ilford Islamic Centre, Albert Road, Ilford.

Inspiring

The workshop last week kicked off with a talk about Islam from Rukhsana Zafar, who teaches at South Woodford Mosque, Mulberry Way, South Woodford.

Mrs Zafar said: “The day was brilliant – I really enjoyed it.

“I think it’s a very important topic and the afternoon did a lot for me. People came from all backgrounds.

“It’s so beautiful to be in a multicultural community.”

The forum intends to run more workshops which cater just for women as it gives them an opportunity to speak frankly in a space they feel comfortable in.

Dulcie Thomson, who attends the Vine United Reformed Church in Riches Road, Ilford, said meeting women from different faiths was inspiring.

“I think for some faiths, if men are present, women don’t really get the opportunity to speak as freely as they would like,” Mrs Thomson said. “I have enjoyed every event I have been to. It’s very inspiring.”

The chance to meet and learn about women from different faiths and break down barriers was one of the draws for Yasmin Khan, who attends the mosque next to where the meeting took place.

She said: “I thought I could contribute to my community and make it better.

“I’m a British Muslim and I want to make society and the country better.

“I got to meet people from a local church who I would have never met before.”
