Today marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Redbridge, and Greater London, as we know it.
The Local Government Act 1963 was given royal assent on July 31, allowing the creation of 32 new London boroughs combining existing areas and engulfing surrounding counties.
Redbridge took the districts of Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford and parts of Dagenham and Chigwell out of Essex and into the capital.
The move still generates controversy to this day, with the subject of whether areas are in London or Essex still being hotly debated.
A poll on the Recorder website in June found 64 per cent of voters felt Redbridge was in London, while more than a third identified with the former county.
Redbridge Council will be marking the act, which did not come into effect until 1965, next year.
