Team GB 3 Australia 3

Surbiton’s James Tindall believes Team GB’s dramatic fight-back against Australia shows they can be a match for anyone at the Olympic Games.

The world champions raced into a three-goal lead with an early double strike from Russell Ford, followed by a second-half goal courtesy of Mark Knowles.

But Jonty Clarke’s 47-minute effort launched the comeback. Barry Middleton struck from a penalty corner to reduce the deficit further, before Tindall’s equaliser sparked wild celebrations.

Subsequently, Team GB need just a point from their final Group A match with Spain tomorrow night to progress to the last four.

And Tindall believes the character of his side, combined with a vociferous home crowd, gives Team GB a great chance of winning their first men’s hockey Olympic medal since clinching gold in 1988.

“It was a relief to get that third goal against such a great team in world hockey,” he said. “It shows that we are up there and one of the best.

“In every single game we’ve played the crowd have been phenomenal. We have the best supporters anywhere and always will do.

“They really gave us the boost we needed to get that third goal and push for the fourth.”
