Councillors also field questions from the public on education, housing and the London Mayoral election.
Westminster City Council’s purchase of houses in Redbridge was the main topic at the latest local forum, held at Wanstead Library, on Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, yesterday.
As the Recorder has revealed today, the Central London borough has been purchasing cheap housing in Redbridge to house its homeless.
Deputy leader of the council, Cllr Wes Streeting (Lab, Aldborough) described this as “the social cleansing of Central London and Westminster.”
Leader of the council, Cllr Jas Athwal (Lab, Mayfield) also spoke of the “Westminster problem” within the borough.
Also fielding questions, from a crowd of over 60 people, were leader of the opposition, Cllr Paul Canal (Con, Woodford Bridge), and director of environment and community services Simon Barry.
There was largely a consensus when it came to responding to residents’ issues.
