We asked the leaders of Redbridge’s three main parties to discuss their campaigns and state why residents should vote for them. Here are their responses.
Cllr Ian Bond, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: “First and foremost people are electing a team of councillors to represent and work for them for the next four years.
“Therefore, voters should consider whether they are happy with the service they receive from their existing councillors, or not.
“This is a critical election for Redbridge and I would urge everyone to vote.
“Where people have elected Lib Dems, they appreciate having hardworking councillors who campaign on their behalf.
“Housing is being raised as an issue more than in previous elections. We are happy our programme for Redbridge remains the right one.”
Cllr Jas Athwal, leader of the Labour Party, said: “After 12 years of a Tory-led council it’s time for change and we hope that the people give us the opportunity to serve.
“Only Redbridge Labour is fighting for vital services like the NHS and local police and only Redbridge Labour has a plan for restoring pride in the borough.
“We had an excellent response to our pledges but people also brought up a number of other issues. That’s why we announced an additional set of pledges which included more funding for crime prevention and an end to parking restrictions on bank holidays.”
Cllr Keith Prince, leader of the Conservatives, said: “Over the past four years we have listened to what residents want, which is why we have frozen council tax for the past five years and will freeze it for a further two with our “council tax lock”.
“We are introducing free parking for 30 minutes and sweeping residential streets weekly.
“Our plan shows we have a clear vision for the borough’s future, worked on over many years of listening to residents, compared to Labour’s rushed out manifesto at the start of the campaign.
“By voting Conservative, people will be voting for strong leadership and a secure future for Redbridge.”
