Grant Cameron, of Harpenden Road, claimed he was tortured by police after being arrested on drugs charges last year while on holiday with friends.

But now his ordeal is over after he was freed in a prison amnesty held to mark Ramadan in the United Arab Emirates.

Friend Tom Crompton said Grant arrived back in the UK last night.

He added: “It’s still a shock to him that he’s free – his family is so relieved.”

Grant was in prison with friends Suneet Jeerh, of Ilford, and Karl Williams, of Wanstead.

It is understood they have also been acquitted in the amnesty but no date has been confirmed for their arrival home.

The trio were arrested on July 3 last year, after police claimed they found a synthetic cannabis substitute known as “spice” in their hire car.

In a witness statement, Karl, of Herongate Road, described horrific abuse at the hands of police.

He wrote: “They pulled down my trousers, spread my legs and started to electrocute my testicles.

“It was unbelievably painful. I was so scared.

“I started to believe that I was going to die in that room.”

The men were imprisoned for months without trial and were found guilty of drugs consumption earlier this year, despite denying all charges.

Although the men’s sentences appeared to have been reduced, a “full, impartial and independent investigation” into the torture allegations promised by UAE authorities has yet to emerge, despite pressure from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Prime Minister David Cameron.
