Redbridge Council has stepped into the Scottish independence debate, revealing its plan to fly the Saltire - Scotland’s national flag - above the Town Hall ahead of the referendum.
Deputy leader Wes Streeting told the Recorder: “The outcome of the Scottish Referendum will have an impact on the whole of the United Kingdom.
“Like other councils across Britain, we’ll be flying the flag for the Union - a partnership that has benefited the people of these islands for over 300 years.
“In doing so, we’re sending a message to our Scottish friends as they cast their vote: we’re better together and weaker apart.”
He added the council was in the process of “procuring” the flag and would raise it soon. It will fly above Redbridge Town Hall next to the Union Flag.
The announcement follows a call by Labour Party leader Ed Miliband for councils across the UK to fly the Saltire “to send a very clear message to the people of Scotland: please stay with us because we believe we are stronger together”.
