A review of a parking permit system in Wanstead which has angered local residents and businesses was brought forward last night by councillors.

Addison, Chaucer, Dangan and Spratt Hall Roads are undergoing a 12-month trial of residents’ only permits, designed to stop out-of-town commuters taking spaces.

At an area one committee meeting at Wanstead Church School, Church Path, Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Wanstead’s six Conservative councillors agreed to accept a provisional assessment of the scheme.

It will be submitted to their next meeting on July 23.

Speaking at the meeting, Stavros Nicola, the owner of The Bungalow Caf in Spratt Hall Road, estimated losses of 15 per cent in revenue since the measures were brought in last month.

He said: “I’ve received numerous complaints from customers regarding this.

“They’ve said they’ll be looking elsewhere to eat.”

Speaking today, his manager, Alex Dejczoova, 31, said: “We’re usually busy from 7am to 7.45am, it’s normally packed but we had three customers until 7.30am.”.

Igor Bekaert, the owner of the Belgique patisserie in Cambridge Park, also voiced his concerns at the meeting.

He said: “I do think the decision was the wrong one. “From a financial point of view, I’m down about 200 a day.

“I will survive, but it’s really hurt people and upset people.”

Resident Greg Eglin said business parking permits could be introduced in Spratt Hall Road.

Cllr Michelle Dunn, of Wanstead ward, said: “We did go out to consultation and residents’ wanted parking permits.”

“When we see the east side of Spratt Hall Road is empty, I’m sure Sue Nolan [the cabinet member for highways] will sit down and look at what can be done.”

Cllrs Thomas Chan, Michelle Dunn, and Sue Nolan, initially felt a review should be held after the Olympics.

Cllr Chan, of Wanstead ward, said: “It would be very difficult if we changed now for residents to find an inch of space.”
