Plans to build a new multi-million pound public swimming pool in Redbridge have been unveiled.

Following years of campaigning, Redbridge Council has confirmed a feasibility study will be carried out at Mayfield School in Pedley Road, Goodmayes.

The announcement follows years of campaigning by residents for a new pool to be built in the borough, which currently has just one at Fulwell Cross Leisure Centre.

Cllr Wes Streeting, cabinet member for health and wellbeing and deputy leader of the council, said: “This is a huge step forward for the Borough and will deliver on our promise to residents who have waited too long for a much-needed new public swimming facility.”

Labour councillors had pledged to build a new pool as a key part of their manifesto ahead of the election in May.

Cllr Streeting said the authority expected the process to take around two and a half years, with proposals due to be discussed at the health, leisure adn older people service ocmmittee on Monday January 5.

The new facility would include a 25-metre pool with six lanes and a 40-station gym.

Initial proposals would see £2.75 million funded by the council with the remaining £500,000 met by external funding.

Chairman of Mayfield School’s governing body David Backhouse welcomed the plans.

“The addition of a swimming pool and gym will further enhance the sports and leisure facilities on the site for the benefit of staff, students and the local community,” he said.

He said main consideration of the feasibility study would be maintaining school security and safey of students.

“The school will support local authority officers in determining how best to fit a pool onto the school site,” he added.
