A pilot project to reduce the cost of parking in high streets is to be rolled out in time for the busy Christmas period.

A charge of 30p for 30 minutes for on-street pay and display areas and 30p for 20 minutes in Ilford Town Centre will be tried out to see if it increases trade.

At the moment it costs 80p in Ilford town centre to park for up to 20 minutes.

The plans were given the rubber stamp at the cabinet meeting on Thursday in Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, Ilford, in response to businesses and residents complaining about the cost of parking.

The annual loss of income to the council, if the project is permanently implemented, is £300,000 which rises to £373,000 if Ilford town centre is included.
