Nearly 70 per cent of people in Ilford who visited a roadshow this week were found to be at risk of diabetes.
The Healthy Lifestyle Roadshow, from charity Diabetes UK and Bupa, was in Ilford High Road on Tuesday and Wednesday to test people for the condition.
An estimated 4,600 people in the area have type two diabetes, which can lead to strokes, heart disease, kidney failure and blindness, without knowing.
The condition is caused by having two much sugar in the blood because of a lack of insulin and lifestyle factors.
Our of the 243 people tested at the roadshow, 166 were deemed to be at risk and referred to their doctors.
The roadshow offered advice on lifestyle changes and healthy eating to prevent diabetes.
Mayor of Redbridge, Cllr Muhammed Javed, attended the event.
He said: “I’m delighted the roadshow came to Ilford.
“I discovered I have some of the risk factors so, in addition to talking to my GP this sets me up with a challenge, to eat healthy, to keep fit and do more exercise.”
