The Redbridge Green Party held a protest this weekend to highlight the imminent increase in aircraft noise in Wanstead.

From February 4 City Airport will concentrate flight paths over Wanstead, Leyton and Leytonstone, as a technology upgrade means planes will stay on their proposed routes more often.

The Green Party gathered signatures for a petition against the proposals outside Leytonstone Tube station on Saturday, which a spokeswoman said would turn Wanstead into a “noise ghetto”.

RoseMary Warrington, a Green Party Greater London Assembly candidate said: “There is strong public support against the flight path plans by London City Airport, as the noise will bring additional misery to the lives of thousands of East End residents.”

The former Ilford South parliamentary candidate added: “The conduct of City Airport has been a disgrace, ignoring the wishes of local people. It’s time to listen to us.”
