Pressure must be put on highways bosses to make safety improvements at a “dangerous” junction which has been the scene of a string of serious accidents, councillors have urged.

Earlier this month, a rider was badly hurt in a collision with a car in Eastern Avenue, in front of Newbury Park Tube station.

The junction has been blasted by residents and politicians for years, with many accidents caused by drivers illegally performing U-turns.

At an area committee four meeting held last night in William Torbitt Primary School, Eastern Avenue, Newbury Park, councillors admitted they were powerless to make safety improvements to the road as it was the responsibility of Transport for London (TfL).

Conservative Cllr Vanessa Cole said: “We can moan to TfL all we like, but unfortunately they have a bee in their bonnet. They think they’re right.”

Labour Cllr Debbie Kaur-Thiara said: ”It’s become a serious situation. We have to write to TfL on this issue.”

The debate was sparked when a resident of a nearby road urged action to be taken, telling councillors he can hear accidents from his house when they happen.

Redbridge Council highways manager Mike Woodward told the committee: “We can only put pressure on TfL and we are doing all we can in that respect.”

He added a temporary traffic order, prohibiting drivers turning right in to nearby King George Avenue, would come in to place soon as part of roadworks in the area.

Redbridge and Havering London Assembly member Roger Evans this week asked mayor Boris Johnson to respond to concerns on the safety of the road.

In January 2011, 69-year-old lollipop man Dusan Danilovic died when his car ended up on its side after a four-car pile-up as a result of drivers turning on the stretch of road.

The bike accident earlier this month was followed days later by another more minor car accident in the same spot.
