The subway at Gants Hill is to get a quarterly deep clean thanks to action by area committee four councillors.
Members voted at a meeting at Sinclair House, Woodford Bridge Road, Clayhall on Thursday to fund the �3,500 cost of the initial scrub-down and also agreed to fund three-monthly deep cleans, at a cost of �10,000 a year.
The cleansing is needed after Transport for London (TfL) stopped its regular fortnightly clean in October last year.
Cllr Tania Solomon said: “I just want to say thank you to everybody for this, as it is something I have been working on for a long time.”
The committee hopes to recuperate some of the money for the work from the neighbouring area committee seven when they meet again in January.
A report by council officers said: “Following the decision by TfL the subway complex did deteriorate and resulted in an increase in complaints from residents and users of Gants Hill.”
TfL will continue to clean the subway, but only once a year, making a saving of �100,000.
