A flea ridden rescue dog is about to start her new life as a sniffer hound with Essex Police.
When the poor pooch was donated to the Dog Unit from Crofters Kennels, in Rayleigh, she was ill, underweight and her coat was so matted it had to be shaved off.
Pc Paul Arthey said: “For the first month she wouldn’t venture any further than two metres away from me off the lead.”
But Orla, a springer spaniel border collie cross, turned out to be a natural and is now able to sniff out cocaine, heroin and cannabis as well as ammunition and cash.
Pc Arthey added: “Orla is a natural police dog.”
