A Muslim leader has insisted plans to redevelop a mosque are not about increasing visitor numbers, but transforming an “unsightly” building.
Dr Mohammed Fahim, of South Woodford Muslim Community Centre, Mulberry Way, South Woodford, made the assurance after the plan – which had been due to go to Redbridge Council’s regulatory committee last week – was delayed.
The mosque has scaled down its proposals, and now hopes to erect a two-storey and partially three-storey building, instead of the three-storey building which was rejected previously.
“The current plan addresses the comments made by residents, planners and inspectors,” said Dr Fahim, who believes the proposal, which includes housing, will serve people in the area.
“The trustees and the users of the centre want no favours other than that their application is heard fairly and justly.”
It is now expected to go to the committee on August 24.
