We are a borough of couch potatoes – the number of physically active adults in the borough is “significantly worse” than the national average.

A mere 8.6 per cent of Redbridge adults were active, compared with 11.2 per cent in England as a whole, said the public health report.

Irfan Shah, manager of Frenford Clubs, The Drive, Ilford, said: “I am surprised by the lack of exercise undertaken by people in Redbridge, but it is extremely worrying, as it is so important to be active.”

He thinks people believe they have other priorities in the current economic climate.

He added: “Residents in the borough seem to be waiting for something serious to happen to their health before getting active but this shouldn’t be the case.”
